Supporting 100 villages in Dodamarg block and serving 6000
children and 300 village volunteers
Environment to motivate children to write
The school playground and the fields surrounding it are used
as a starting point to help children develop their extended
writing skills. This gives them the opportunity to think
‘outside the box’, encouraging them to share their opinions
and also to plan their writing
Art and religion working together
In this art competition, the task was to draw something you
wanted to share, in whatever medium.
This child chose to paint a rose …but if you look carefully,
he has incorporated Lord Ganesh into his painting too.
Serving communities
Local employment for parents consists of agriculture and
some community work. Many are daily wage earners so taking
time off to attend training is not a priority. This woman
works as a sweeper in a local park, walks almost 5 km to
work each day and is paid Rs 100 per day.
More classroom support
Here is one of the key classroom activities and ways of
working that staff are encouraging teachers to use in their
lessons: mind mapping. It involves children identifying
aspects of a subject area, in this case “Utrayan”(Kite
Flying) in preparation for a popular festival.
Learning about place value
As Place Value is such an essential mathematical concept,
teachers are taught several different, practical ways of
teaching it. Here children are being supported by bundles of
straws and toy money cards to aid their understanding.
